Everyone talks about “building a personal brand”, but no one actually explains where to start.
Do you post your life? Your work? Your opinions? Do you need to niche down?
If you’ve ever felt like this, you’re not alone.
The truth is, personal branding isn’t about posting more. It’s about having clarity, direction, and a strategy behind what you share.
If you’re new to personal branding or wondering how to build a personal brand that actually works, this guide will help you get started.
What Personal Branding Actually Is
Personal branding is not just about aesthetics or having a “nice feed”. It’s how people perceive you online. It’s what you become known for. And ultimately, it’s what people think of when your name comes up.
A simple way to think about it:
Your personal brand is your reputation at scale.
Whether you’re posting intentionally or not, you already have one. The goal is to take control of it.
Why Most Beginners Get Stuck
A lot of people don’t struggle with effort, they struggle with direction.

You might recognise yourself in this:
Trying to speak to everyone
Posting inconsistently or without a clear plan
Comparing yourself to others in your industry
Overthinking every single post
The issue isn’t that you’re not capable. It’s that you don’t have clarity on what you’re building.
Step 1: Get Clear on Who You Are Helping
Before you think about content, you need to understand your audience.
Ask yourself:
Who do I want to attract?
What problems do they have?
What do they need help with?
For example, instead of saying:“I help people get fit”
Be more specific:“I help busy professionals lose weight without spending hours in the gym”
Clarity here makes everything else easier.
Step 2: Decide What You Want to Be Known For
This is biggest part of personal branding where most people go wrong.
If you talk about everything, you become known for nothing.
Start with 2–3 core topics that align with what you do.

For example, if you’re a personal trainer, your pillars might be:
Fat loss tips for busy lifestyles
Simple, realistic workouts
Nutrition advice that fits around everyday life
When you consistently talk about the same areas, people start to associate you with them.
Step 3: What to Actually Post
This is the part most people overcomplicate. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel. You just need structure.
A simple way to approach content is to rotate between:
Educational content – teach something useful
Opinions – share your perspective on your industry
Personal insights – lessons, experiences, reflections
Proof – results, client wins, or real examples
If you stick to these, you’ll never run out of things to say.
Step 4: Show Up Consistently
Consistency matters, but not in the way you might think.
You don’t need to post every single day. You need to show up regularly.
Posting three times a week with clear messaging will always outperform posting daily with no direction.
Consistency without strategy is just noise.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
As you start building your personal brand, try to avoid these:
Waiting until everything is perfect before posting
Constantly changing your niche or direction
Focusing only on how things look rather than what they say
Not engaging with others in your space - this is overlooked so often, but doing this will grow your page a lot more than you imagine.

You don’t need to have everything figured out to start building a personal brand. You need to have the confidence to start and build.
Building a personal brand takes time, but with the right strategy, it becomes a powerful way to attract
opportunities, clients and long-term growth.
